Google’s algorithm was updated 3 times (at least) during the first months of 2012, making significant changes and reordering the visibility in the search results.

Basically trying to improve something is a good attitude. Your Internet marketer role is to pay close attention to all this and change your strategies in order to make your business profitable (this should be written: to have your website on google first page).

Page layout algorithm update.

The first update we are talking about  is related to the amount of advertisement you see on the page once you click on a result (page layout algorithm). If you have placed lots of ads “above-the-fold” your website will be affected (penalized). Google explain this because of the bad users experiences who can’t see content right away. Placing ads “above-the-fold” is a common strategy to better monetize, but from now you must use this part of the screen shared between your ads and the content.  The browser size tool used by Google is available here, so you have an idea about how to improve your ads placement.

This is not a critical update, on my opinion, because you can take action right away and modify the position of your ads or move some widgets and here you are. At the next Google re-crawl your website will be back in his best search engine placement.

Other update is about link evaluation.

Google changed the way in which it evaluates links; in particular, they have turned off the method of link analysis (used for several years until now). This is a major change of the game, because Google has penalized the blog networks whose purpose is to create backlinks. This means if any of you have bought links from private blog networks (Linkvana, Build My Rank and others), then you’re about to see your links going bye-bye.

First step you need to take: don’t buy any more links from private blog networks, and if you have used this before, take close attention to what happened to that network. Also the “overly optimized” linked have no value now (maybe bad value) and you must take care on where from, how and how much updated info grades have your link building providers. Forget about tens of thousands of profile backlinks, PRx backlinks, auto comments for $1, or other “deals” because the best scenario is you will lose the money. But the worst scenario will be to be penalized  because of those links.

I know this will cause concerns among you, but the idea is just not to use cheap, useless backlinking services (or scripts), and focus on backlinking methods similar to manually backlinks or real comments on blogs. For example, the Build My Rank website was forced to close the business; other companies  are not taking new clients until this problems will be solved (I can tell you from now – it will not be solved and those networks and link farms are all very dead ends).

Your on-page SEO will be from now more important as it was ever before. Don’t push hard on keyword anchor text to be the exact targeted keyword. After update this can “tell” Google: here is an over-link optimization and don’t look natural. Make the anchor text much natural possible. Focus on the Social Media links, those are playing a larger role and you will not be penalized (hopefully never).

Google made some significant technical changes to its services.

Market Samurai pulls data from dozens of different search data providers so that we have all this data’s on a single place. In order to obtain this data they need to perform large numbers of queries and searches through free services such as Google, Yahoo! or Bing on the users behalf. Several days ago, Google made some significant technical changes to its services that make it impossible to reliably perform large volumes of free queries.

This is why, some of Market Samurai portions of services are not accurate, or missing. The official response of Market Samurai team is that they working to solve this problem and they will move some services to other providers.  They actually are going to just replace Google with Bing.

Until this change are implemented, they advice all customers to introduce a manual check for SEOC values, similar to that for the SEOTC/SEOUC values.

The module most affected by these Google changes is the Rank Tracker module. Not only for Market Samurai comes this issue, but I notice a similar problem with Niche Sensei, and for sure is general on all software developed on this technique.

The decision to move from Google to Bing and Yahoo is definitive for Market Samurai stuff. Google has no API (commercial or otherwise) which is suitable for tracking rankings. There are third-party companies that do have accurate APIs to Google, but the high number of Market Samurai customers, make it impossible to deal on an agreement. We are talking about astronomical amounts (~800.000$ they should pay / month), so the value of a custom subscription can’t fit this.

The changes will take a while to implement, at least several weeks. I’m sure they will go for a valid and qualitative solution, because the team is great. Instead, for clients, be prepared for hard times and look for other services for a while.

I don’t want you to understand that I’m against Market Samurai – “au contraire” I’m a fun. I hope this guys will pass over this temporary problem and will come with something great!  Keep it up – I’m a “moral” devotee.

Any Internet Marketer need to have several income sources.

Because of the SOPA thing and all protests around, some important websites like Wikipedia or Warrior Forum was closed for one day. I will not start the debate against SOPA (now), but one important issue is to understand.  What will happen if you depend about just one internet service – and that service will be shout down? You probably will be disappointed, go angry, full of panic and at the end you need to start again or quit.

Here is my point: don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

A lot of people have lost a lot of money and some Warriors actually make 100% of their money from the Warrior forum selling WSO’s and then there are the people that offer several services (e.g. fan pages, content etc.) via the forum and they also couldn’t make any sales! Imagine that the Warrior Forum will shut down tomorrow or the owner would decide that people can’t offer stuff anymore. Same examples about any affiliate platform. Imagine your Adsense websites will be banned by Google, and your only income source was Adsense income. Totally disastrous, but things can happened.

What you can do about this?

One common sense strategy: diversify everything. One incident can destroy your whole business! This is scary – and that’s exactly why you always have to strive for multiple sources of income so that you don’t have all your eggs in one basket. Create recurring income via membership sites or via signing up offline clients on a recurring basis. Do Webinars, create products, do affiliate marketing, grow your email list, start with CPA, enroll in several payment processors – whatever you prefer, make sure that you have at least 2-3 sources of income so that if something happens to one of them, you are still in business.

This is the only way, having several sources of income from now on, to be safe and your business on the winner’s side.

Purely Page Rank Theory

PageRank is a link analysis algorithm, named after Larry Page and used by the Google Internet Search Engine, that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of “measuring” its relative importance within the set.

As you can see in the image, mathematical PageRanks (out of 100) for a simple network (PageRanks reported by Google are rescaled logarithmically). Page C has a higher PageRank than Page E, even though it has fewer links to it; the link it has is of a much higher value. A web surfer who chooses a random link on every page (but with 15% likelihood jumps to a random page on the whole web) is going to be on Page E for 8.1% of the time. (The 15% likelihood of jumping to an arbitrary page corresponds to a damping factor of 85%.) Without damping, all web surfers would eventually end up on Pages A, B, or C, and all other pages would have PageRank zero. Page A is assumed to link to all pages in the web, because it has no outgoing links.

For SEO purposes, some companies offer to sell high PageRank links to webmasters. As links from higher PR pages are believed to be more valuable, they tend to be more expensive. It can be an effective and viable marketing strategy to buy link advertisements on content pages of quality and relevant sites to drive traffic and increase a webmaster’s link popularity. However, Google has publicly warned webmasters that if they are or were discovered to be selling links for the purpose of conferring PageRank and reputation, their links will be devalued (ignored in the calculation of other pages’ PageRanks). The practice of buying and selling links is intensely debated across the Webmaster community. Google advises webmasters to use the nofollow HTML attrib value on sponsored links. Google is concerned about webmasters who try to game the system, and thereby reduce the quality and relevancy of Google search results.

Google Freshness Algorithm Update Released

Beginning of November takes us on a new google algorithm update about the freshness of the websites content. This changes that Google said would affect around 35% of total Web searches. According on this new algorithm, sites with fresher, more-up-to-date content, including many news sites, blogs, broadcasters and brand sites, have indeed seen a boost from the update, as Google promised.

This algorithm update was announced as an extension of its previous “Caffeine” update. The so-called “freshness update,” as it’s called, aims deliver more current and relevant search results, specifically in areas where the most recent content matters. This includes things like current events, hot topics, reviews and breaking news items.

Some websites lost SEO visibility after the changes, but they didn’t seem to represent any specific one group, as they also included some brands, blogs or broadcasters.

What you have to do is publish fresh new content, and implement your links from social accounts (facebook, twitter) on as many pages you can, plus improve with many “share” buttons your viral distribution, engage your members with comments (after akismet or similar is online) and take care about your content with periodic updates.
